What’s up with the Dino? The story of our logo!

What’s up with the Dino?

Nicole and I are constantly asked by friends, clients, and other photographers, “whats up with the dino?”  Specifically, they ask questions like “do you want to do only children’s photography?” or “does it mean that you use film instead of digital cameras?”  Well, those questions are easy to answer: no and no!  We love shooting weddings and senior sessions, too!  And we use digital cameras…not film!

So, truthfully, what’s up with the dino in our logo?  The short answer is dinosaurs are awesome and my wife loves me!!!  The long answer?  Well, here goes…

When I was a kid, I absolutely loved dinosaurs!  Yeah, I know…big surprise!…a kid likes dinosaurs.  But dinosaurs were kinda my thing.  My kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Davis, even started a dinosaur week just to get me interested in school.  As my mother tells the story, I wasn’t a fan of school at all!  One week, I became super sick with the flu.  And, to everyone’s surprise, I had no interest in going home!  Why?  We were learning about dinosaurs!  Unfortunately, a sick child just can’t stay at school, so Mrs. Davis called home to tell my mother to come pick me up.  She was excited to share with my mother just how happy she was that I finally wanted to be at school!  All thanks to dinosaurs.

So I’ve been a dino fan for a long time.  I had dinosaur books, stencils, socks, shirts, and (more importantly) shoes.  Yep, that’s right!  My shoes were covered with dinosaurs.  Ask my mother about the time I outgrew my dinosaur Ked’s.  She’ll tell you that I quickly told her, “well, we can just cut off the end and I can still wear them.”  (I really was a cute kid, right?!?!)  My favorite book of all time was (and still is!) Dinosaur Bob by Bill Joyce.  If you know anything of Mr. Joyce’s work, you would know that he also happens to be a dinosaur fan.  (Check out Disney’s Meet the Robinsons and you’ll see the school mascot is a Brontosaurus who happens to look exactly the same as Bob.  I wish my school mascot would have been a dinosaur!)  My personal copy of Dinosaur Bob is even autographed by Mr. Joyce and features a hand drawn Bob!

Now with that background information, let’s jump ahead to the year 2005 when I convinced this amazing girl to start dating me.  Over the years, she learned the stories mentioned above and a few others along the way.  Because she loved me, she fostered my love of dinosaurs and soon she became a dino fan, too.  Dinosaurs became OUR thing.

Now let’s jump ahead again to 2010 when Nicole and I began debating what our photography logo would be.  We wanted it to be a reflection of us and our personalities.  We absolutely 100% didn’t want it just to be another picture of a camera or something solely camera related.  We wanted it to be something that when you saw it you knew “that’s Kevin & Nicole!”  After a while, my brilliant and beautiful wife said, “I wonder if we could put a little dinosaur in the B in Berg?”  Ding ding ding!!!  We have a winner!!!  That idea lead to our little camera holding dinosaur logo.

You see, Nicole and I are pretty laid back, a little silly, and absolutely quirky (in a cute fun way, I promise)!  So we think our logo is a pretty great representation of us.  We think our logo has the same fun spirit that we do.  It’s a one of a kind, and so are we.

In all honesty, this post could have been much longer with much more detail, but we wanted to keep it as simple as possible.  I hope that you have all enjoyed a look behind the curtain here at Berg Photography.

This weekend, we’re headed to Austin, Texas, to shoot a wedding!  So check back next week for a bridal session and some awesome Texas wedding goodness!

Kevin’s Birthday!!!

Kevin finally caught up to me in age again! (Yeah, I’m a few months older than him…) His birthday was technically over a week ago, but we celebrated for a full week! While his actual birthday was spent celebrating with friends and family, Kevin and I decided to take off this past weekend to celebrate his birthday just the two of us. (Any excuse to get out of town for a while, right?) After Google searching nearby places to visit, we ended up choosing The Hideaway Ranch & Retreat in Bluff Dale, TX.  We spent a wonderful weekend relaxing in our cabin and visiting nearby sites.

One of the coolest things about our little trip was that we found a town that has a dinosaur theme!  No joke!  We had so much fun visiting Glen Rose, TX, and seeing dinosaurs everywhere!  (Even the aisle signs at the local Brookshire’s grocery store had dinosaurs on them!)  While there, we couldn’t pass up visiting…

Yep! We went to Dinosaur World! It’s a total tourist trap but oh so much fun if you go in with the right attitude! We had a blast walking around viewing their life sized dinosaurs.

But the most fun we had was taking goofy photos. We both attempted a “run-because-they’re-coming-to-get-us” photo. Not gonna lie…I think mine was better! What do you think?

And, since Kevin made me pose for a quick photo shoot on my birthday, I made him do the same! I have an incredibly handsome husband, don’t I? :)

Kevin, happy birthday! I can’t believe how lucky I am to have you in my life! Every year just gets better! I love you so much! To our readers, check back on Thursday to find out why we have a dinosaur in our logo!

Etsy Finds – ’80s Edition

Ok, so it’s no secret that I love the ’80s.  I realize that some people are horrified by their clothing choices as a kid, but I just laugh happily looking back at photos of me as a kid.  The ’80s were FUN!  Seriously…I didn’t wear blue jeans until junior high!  Why bother?  Leggings were so comfortable!  And those crazy headbands made from Coca-Cola bottle wraps or balloons?  I totally wore those.  And on my feet?  Jellies all the way!  So, for fun, I went on a quest to find ’80s inspired items that reminded me of my childhood…

1) First up is a cool rainbow headband by RK Designs.  This so reminds me of Rainbow Brite!

2)  And to go with my Rainbow Brite headband?  Well, I need rainbow arm warmers!  These are made by Mirabeans.  (Psst…she also makes leg warmers!!!)

3) This next item is just too cool for words.  If you were a kid in the ’80s, please (PLEASE!) tell me that you remember Jem and the Holograms!  I think this Jem onesie by RainbowAlternative will be a gift for our niece, Isla…

4)  If Isla gets a Jem onesie, do you think her aunt Nicole needs these Jem earrings from Jegas Creations?  I kind of think I do!

5) Or do you think an adult woman should wear something more fierce?  Maybe a pair of She-Ra earrings?  (Check out Sweetgyrl Designs!  She has several neat items that could’ve been featured in this post!)

6) Our last featured item features my role model as a kid…Punky Brewster!  I LOVED that show!!!!!  (I even have it on DVD! PUNKY POWER!)  I wanted to be just as cool as Punky was!  So, when I saw this I-phone cover by Sherry’s Stock, I got a HUGE smile on my face!

Thanks for checking out this Etsy Finds post! As a reward, I’ll end this post with somewhat embarassing proof that I loved both Jem and Rainbow Brite…

Yes, I AM wearing a Rainbow Brite outfit in that last picture! :) That’s it for today! Check back next week for a post celebrating Kevin’s birthday! (Yes, his birthday was actually last Saturday but he gets a full week of celebration!)
