In early August, I woke up at about 4 am, which if you know me at all is super early, and drove to D’Arbonne State Park to meet up with a group to go on a morning kayak excursion on Corney Creek. I was hired by Louisiana Life Magazine to photograph the group of kayakers for an article to run in the September edition. As the article has been published, I am happy to finally share a few images from the day! The group was led by our tour guide, Stephanie Herrmann, who was a wonderful guide!
Now, to share a few embarrassing stories from my day in a kayak. I was very concerned in the days leading up to the shoot about turning my boat over and fully submerging my camera gear. I may have had a nightmare or two, because, well, I know myself and I tend to get wet around water. So, right off the bat as I started to paddle a few feet off shore, you bet it, I almost tumped over. But, being the ever nimble/athletic/lucky guy I am, I found my center and got comfortable on the water. (Did I mention this was my first time ever in a kayak?)
The next embarrassing story is a true “Kevin” moment. There were a few spots along the paddle where we had to get out of the kayak and pull it on shore to get around a fallen tree or some other spot that was non-navigable. So, as we pull up to one spot and it is my turn to get out of my kayak, our lovely guide, Stephanie, offered to take my camera while I got out of the boat and readjusted. Of course, I said, “no, thanks, I’ve got it.” And then it happened. My foot sank way further than expected in the mud and my kayak started to move from under my other foot. Thankfully, I was able to hop like a champ and miraculously keep my camera out of the water. I think the camera was the only thing on me that did not get soaked during that encounter. Needless to say, I passed the camera off after that experience!
In the end, everything turned out great. I had a wonderful time, captured some beautiful images, and really just had an incredible experience!
Here is a link to the online article that was posted by Louisiana Life. My flip-flops even made the featured image for the article! And Nicole said I should have moved my flops for the pic! (She was probably right, but hey it worked!)
Unchartered Waters
Now for a few pics from the day!
I liked the look photographing from behind the group of kayakers, and, man, oh, man, did it wear me out paddling from the back to front, back to front!!!
Even on assignment, I’m looking to capture love. These two were just adorable and lots of fun on the water!!!
I hope you enjoyed looking through a few of my images from the day! I posted a teaser of this on instagram right after we finished the day…here is that instagram post! (And, if you don’t already, make sure to follow us on instagram, @kevkberg, @nicolehberg)
