Walkabout – Houston, TX

G’day, mates!  This past weekend Nicole and I traveled to Houston, Texas, so Nicole could attend a CEU course for her 9-5 job.  Nicole was in class all day on both Saturday and Sunday, so I had LOTS of time to kill.  So what is a man to do in an unfamiliar town with lots of time?…Go on a walkabout. (Walkabout coming from Australia. It’s the term used to define a spiritual journey but also used by Paul Hogan in Crocodile Dundee as more of an exploratory journey.)   But since Houston is gigantic my walkabout included lots of driving.  With my trusty 24-70L lens, I set out for my adventure.

First, I headed into downtown on my way to a camera store to test out a few lenses that Nicole and I have been researching. I made sure to keep my eyes peeled for any interesting sites and I found several cool places. One in particular that I loved was a rustic water tower off in the distance. So I pulled over, took a few turns on random streets, and braved a seriously sketchy neighborhood all to set up for a nice downtown shot…

Part of the walkabout took me into downtown Houston where I found a beautiful park!  I got there just as the sun was going down and didn’t have as much time as I would have liked to take pictures. But I fired off a few shots and nailed a few keepers.

Before I started my walkabout, I knew there were two places that I had to visit…Reliant Stadium (home of the NFL’s Houston Texans) and Minute Maid park (home of the Houston Astros.)  Reliant Stadium is a stone’s throw away from where I saw my first baseball game ever (the Astrodome!).  Unfortunately, the Astrodome is in serious disrepair, but I’ll always know it as the beautiful stadium where my Dad took me to see the Chicago Cubs play for my first ever major league baseball game!  This next picture is Reliant stadium, which is amazing!

Another random sighting from the interstate…these cool red things.  Not sure what function they serve, but they look great against the blue sky!

I spent lots of time at Minute Maid park!  Baseball stadiums are just beautiful!  Even though pitchers and catchers don’t report for another 19 days, you can tell people are looking forward to the start of baseball season.  There were several families taking pictures, people just checking out the stadium, and a father and son playing catch outside of the stadium.  Coming from a diehard football fan, it’s hard to admit but baseball really is America’s favorite past time.

Well, I hope you enjoyed pictures from my walkabout! These walkabout posts will infrequently pop up everytime I get the chance to go exploring!
